In the past, many parents hesitated to store their baby’s cord blood due to concerns about insufficient stem cell quantity. Now, Supercell Biotechnology has achieved a breakthrough in ex vivo expansion technology for stem cells. Led by Dr. Hsiao-Min Huang and Dr. Shao-Ling Yao from the Food Industry Research and Development Institute, this innovation is the result of ten years of continuous research and development. After rigorous review by the U.S. patent office, the team was granted a U.S. patent in 2014 for the “Optimizing Culture Medium for CD34+ Hematopoietic Cell Expansion”, a serum-free formulation that enables efficient stem cell proliferation.
Patent title: “Optimizing Culture Medium for CD34+ Hematopoietic Cell Expansion”
Patent number: US 8762074 B2
This serum-free culture medium is designed for the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells from various sources. It offers the advantages of being serum-free, feeder cell-free, and having low cytokine concentrations, ensuring high safety and stability. It successfully enables hematopoietic stem cells to proliferate more than 30-fold within seven days, meeting the quantity requirements for adult stem cell transplantation in clinical applications.

Safeguarding your most precious cellular resources, Supercell Biotechnology has established its Cell Preservation and Application Center within Taiwan’s highest-standard facility—the Biorepository and Research Center of the Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI), a national-level cell storage institution.
Our preservation center is located inside FIRDI’s Biorepository, recognized as the first in Asia and among the top ten biorepositories worldwide. Operated under national-grade standards, the center ensures rigorous quality control over all preserved cells and biological resources. All procedures, equipment, and specifications comply with GTP (Good Tissue Practice) guidelines for human cell and tissue handling, and have passed certifications from Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, TAF, and other international bodies. This guarantees the quality and viability of cryopreserved cells, offering absolute peace of mind to all stakeholders.
Asia’s leading hardware and software for cell storage.
Ranked among the world’s top ten biorepositories.
Also serves as the storage center for Taiwan’s National Health Research Institutes and Academia Sinica.
Designated backup storage site for patented cell resources from the U.S., Japan, U.K., France, Germany, and more.
Supercell Biotechnology utilizes LABS vapor-phase liquid nitrogen storage systems to preserve isolated stem cells at a stable temperature of −196°C. Each tank is equipped with an integrated operating platform for safe and efficient handling, ensuring consistent low temperatures and preventing sudden warming effects. By using cryovials stored in vapor-phase tanks, we eliminate the risk of cross-contamination associated with immersion-based storage methods.
To ensure stable cryogenic storage conditions, Supercell Biotechnology employs an 11-ton automated liquid nitrogen filling tank. Controlled by a centralized system, the timing of nitrogen replenishment is precisely managed to prevent pressure fluctuations during refills and maintain consistent low temperatures throughout the preservation process.
Our facility is also equipped with a comprehensive disaster prevention and management system, including:
